GirlyMaps draws the map itself from OpenMapTiles vector tiles served by OpenFreeMap, searches with Photon and calculates routes with Valhalla. It does not use Apple Maps or Google Maps data — that is what lets it colour every part of the map.

No. Routes come from open map data and do not include live traffic, road closures or temporary restrictions. Always follow road signs and use your own judgement.

iPhone with iOS 18 or later, and CarPlay. Widgets on CarPlay need iOS 26 or later. There is no Android version.

Yes. The map is downloaded as you look around, and search and routing are answered by online services, so GirlyMaps needs mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Yes, as a full navigation app: themed map, search by typing or voice, Home, Work, favorites and recents, route previews and turn-by-turn guidance on the car screen. It also fills the map tile on the CarPlay Dashboard.

On iOS 26 or later: Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Widgets, turn on Show Widgets, tap Add Widget and pick GirlyMaps. Tap ⓘ → Design to choose a design, and close with ✕ to save.

CarPlay switches to a dark look at night or when your car asks for it. GirlyMaps follows with a night version of your own theme rather than a generic dark map.

Through an Apple Shortcuts automation: when CarPlay connects, disconnects or you arrive home, the automation runs a GirlyMaps action that plays the sound you chose in the app. The app walks you through setting it up once.

Yes, with Pro: record up to 15 seconds and use it when CarPlay connects, disconnects or when you get home. Recordings stay on your iPhone.

On your Home Screen, in StandBy and on CarPlay's widget screen. Choose from stickers, clocks, affirmations and place buttons, or design your own.

No. GirlyMaps has no accounts or sign-in of any kind.

No. Your location is used to show where you are and to guide trips, and it is not stored as a history. Saved places, recent searches, widget designs and recordings stay on your iPhone.

To search and route, the search text and the coordinates involved are sent to the open map services (Photon and Valhalla), like any web request. Anonymous usage statistics and crash reports go to Firebase. Nothing that identifies you, and never your saved places or recordings.

In your App Store account: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → GirlyMaps. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current week ends. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.

Purchases are made through the App Store, so refunds are handled by Apple under its policies — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
